Khanom JuJun

My Locally Nostalgic Thai Snacks
Khanom Jujun or Khanom Fhakbua
Khanom Jujun {Malay = Kuih Cucur or Bahasa Indonesian = Kue Cucur} or "Lotus Pod" or "Fried Egg" mildly-sweet Snack: Deep-fried Rice flour Batter (pandan flavour) & Coconut sugar, one of the best local nostalgic delicacies of mine, proudly presented by Me. :)
It's Love at first bite with its ridiculously opposite taste of crispy edges and naturally Pandan flavoured, soft-honeycomb sponge like texture in the middle. When I was little, I only ate the crispy edges, discretely throwing the middle part of khanom in the bin, with a very good excuse, when asked: "for poor ants' gala dinner!" Such a well-behaved & sweet girl...huh? ;)
I have made an acquaintance with a nice mama who sells these "Khanom" at the biggest market in my hometown. She smiled while seeing me, paying close attention to her "making" process, like a kid with a new toy! I know...there's no cure for Anne's curiosity! Seriously! ;)
The best part: when she skillfully ladled prepared batter into each baby wok, with sizzling sound of hot oil...thermodynamically favourable!!! There, she smiled again, asking me to taste one of those, free of charge! I said "Thank you, ma'. I'd prefer to pick a crumb for a wee taste and buy 3 pieces, instead!" (Note* Apparently, Anne bought 7 pcs!!!!)
During my gourmand experiment, I  asked " How many pieces do you sell a day, ma'?"
She replied " About 200-300 pieces at minimum..." then paused and added that she gets up before 3 a.m, then arrives at the market o/a 3.30 a.m, preparing and making "Khanom Jujun" at the market as there're daily orders from small coffee stalls as well as other local stalls. She does her daily-closing by noon....Another day with inspiring story & people...that just made my heart sing! Thank you for making my day! :)
