"Khanom" = sweets/desserts, "Jaak" =Nipa Palm... So "Khanom Jaak", can be translated as Sweets, made from Nipa Palm?!? You guess...?!? In fact, not really...You know, Thai language can be tricky as some words may sound the same but with different meanings... 

ขนม "กู๊ดบาย" ;) หรือ ขนมจาก สูตรโบราณ ไส้มะพร้าวน้ำหอม ขนมไทยโบราณที่มีขายตามจังหวัดที่อยู่ติดชายฝั่งทะเล...ตามแหล่งวัตถุดิบ คือ ต้นจากและมะพร้าว แม่ค้าบอกว่า ไม่น่าเชื่อว่าเด็กรุ่นนี้ รู้จักกินขนมโบราณแบบนี้ด้วย หารู้ไม่ว่าเรารุ่นโบราณ ;) 

ส่วนผสมหลัก มี แป้งข้าวเหนียว, น้ำตาลมะพร้าว, มะพร้าวขูด, เกลือเล็กน้อย วิธีทำไม่ยุ่งยาก แค่ตักส่วนผสมที่ได้ลงบนใบจาก แล้วปะกบกันด้วยไม้กลัดที่ทำจากก้านมะพร้าว แล้วนำมาย่างบนเตาถ่านจนสุกดีทั้งสองด้าน...บางเจ้าหาวัสดุธรรมชาติไม่ได้ ก็ใช้ลวดเย็บแทน สะดวก รวดเร็ว (เด็กรุ่นใหม่นิยมเรียกลวดเย็บกระดาษว่า ไส้แม๊กซ์ ตามยี่ห้อผลิตภัณฑ์)...ส่วนตัวแล้วชอบแบบไม้กลัดมากกว่าเพราะดึงออกจากใบจากได้ง่ายว่าลวดเย็บ ไม่ต้องระวังมากเวลาแกะออก เหมือนลวดเย็บซึ่งมีขนาดเล็กมากจะหล่นลงไปผสมกับขนม แม่ค้านิยมมัดขายเป็นห่อ ๆ ละ 20.-บาท (ราว 6-10 ชิ้น)

Khanom Jaak's main ingredients: glutinous rice batter, grated coconut and coconut or palm sugar. The batter is spooned onto the leaves of a nipa palm which is then wrapped together with eco-friendly coconut toothpicks. A bundle of Khanom Jaak (can be wary from 6-10 pieces) costs 20 Baht! 

 "Jaak" (v) can also mean to part, to leave...or (n) farewell/goodbye. Due to its notoriously tricky meaning, Thai people don't buy this snack as food souvenirs for others for fear that they won't see them again! ;) 

Just for your information, the opposite of Khanom "Jaak" is Khanom "Jeep". Thai men have tendency to buy "Khanom Jeep" for their potential interests during their romantic conquests or dating. It's sort of metaphorical term...as "Jeep" doesn't relate to a well-known brand of American automobiles, but a sign of flirting w/ or courting or wooing someone!!! oops! ;)
"Jeep" (v) to flirt, to court, to woo...or (n) pleat. Khanom Jeep is not considered as a member of "dessert" family, even if we called it "Khanom"...you see? Khanom Jeep is rather a sort of dumplings, with pork, chicken, fish or tofu filling, wrapped and pleated in wonton wrappers, served as breakfast or brunch (dim sum) at local Kopi Tiam, Chinese Restaurant or at your nearest and dearest 7/11's!!!
