ประวัติโดยสังเขป 

วัดใหญ่สุวรรณาราม หรือที่เรียกกันว่า "วัดใหญ่" เป็นพระอารามหลวงชั้นตรี ชนิด วรวิหาร เดิมชื่อว่า "วัดน้อยปักษ์ใต้" สันนิษฐานว่าเป็นวัดที่มีมานานแล้วตั้งแต่สมัยกรุงศรีอยุธยาเป็นราชธานี ดังจะเห็นได้จากหลักฐานตามพระราชหัตถเลขาของพระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว รัชกาลที่ ๕ แห่งกรุงรัตนโกสินทร์ ที่ทรงไว้ว่า "ภาพและลายในพระอุโบสถนี้คงเขียนมาก่อน ๓๐๐ ปีขึ้นไป..." (นับถึงปัจจุบันคงต้องเป็นกว่า ๔๐๐ ปี) ได้มีการบูรณปฏิสังขรณ์ครั้งสำคัญในรัชสมัยสมเด็จพระเจ้าเสือ โดยพระสุวรรณมุนี หรือสมเด็จพระสังฆราช (แตงโม) ได้ทำการบูรณะทั้งอาราม นับเป็นผู้ปฏิสังขรณ์ครั้งใหญ่และสำคัญ ต่อมาสมัยรัชกาลที่ ๕ ได้มีการบูรณะในสมัยพระครูมหาวิหารารักษ์ (พุก) เป็นเจ้าอาวาส ปัจจุบันวัดใหญ่สุวรรณาราม เป็นพระอารามหลวง ๑ ใน ๔ แห่งของจังหวัดเพชรบุรี เป็นวัดที่มีความยิ่งใหญ่และอลังการทั้งในด้านประวัติศาสตร์ ศิลปะ โบราณคดี ตลอดถึงฝีมือสกุลช่างหลายแขนงที่ได้ฝากผลงานอันวิจิตรไว้ในโบราณสถาน โบราณวัตถุ รวมทั้งภาพจิตรกรรมฝาผนังภายในพระอุโบสถและศาลาการเปรียญ ที่ได้รับการอนุรักษ์ไว้อย่างดี

พระอุโบสถ มีพระระเบียงคดล้อมรอบ ลักษณะเป็นสถาปัตยกรรมทรงไทยสมัยอยุธยา ก่ออิฐถือปูน มีหน้าบันประดับกระจกสีประกอบลวดลายปูนปั้นสวยงามมาก ที่ผนังด้านในมีภาพจิตรกรรมฝาผนังเป็นภาพเทพชุมนุม ๕ ชั้น ที่มีความงดงามและทรงคุณค่าทางศิลปะ ด้านหน้าและด้านหลังผนังหุ้มกลองของพระอุโบสถมีบานประตูด้านละ ๒ ช่อง โดยเฉพาะด้านหน้าเจาะช่องหน้าต่างไว้อยู่ระหว่างกึ่งกลางของบานประตูทั้งสองข้าง แต่มีขนาดใหญ่กว่าบานประตู พระอุโบสถหลังนี้จึงแปลกกว่าที่อื่นๆ เพราะมีหน้าต่างเพียงบานเดียว ส่วนด้านหลังของบานประตูและหน้าต่าง มีภาพวาดลายไทยนายทวารบาล

Brief History:

Suwannaram Temple or "Wat Yai Suwannaram", used  to called "Wat Noipaktai" ("Wat" in Thai means Temple) since Ayuddhaya Era. According to King Rama V's writings as the name "Wat Yai", means "big temple" and "Suwan" was derived from the former name of Venerable Phra Sangkaraj as "Thong", or "Suwan" in Thai, means "Gold". It had been promoted as royal monastery (3rd grade) in 2452 B.E. during King Rama V's reign.

Pra U-bosod (Buddha Holy temple) is a remarkable example of traditional Thai architecture (Ayuddhaya Era), with gracefully and subtle Thai carving gable and painting of five classes of Thai angel groups at the front. It has 2 doors each side, with only window in the middle.

This temple is unlike the others due to its one and only window. There is a beautiful painting of door keeping deity at the rear of the doors and window. 

I've fallen in love with this temple since my very first glance from its car park. I said to myself "This is it!", when I noticed the temple's pagoda library. When we arrived at the temple, it was the big preparation day of a royal funeral. Therefore, monks  and novices were all occupied with their assignments. I was enthralled  by the graceful Thainess of each ancient building, like bees to flowers:-) I enjoyed lingering over beauty & charm of Thai arts & architecture...I could never get enough of them and that I totally forgot what time it was, or with whom I was...until my mother called me, saying it was 4.30 p.m (the holy temple's closing time is 5 p.m)! So I woke up from my vivid hallucination:-)
